His wife was killed in battle against orcs in Gundabad, a loss that made him even colder and overprotective of his son Legolas. He also maintained a tense relationship with the dwarves of Erebor due to old grievances. He captured Thorin and company, marched to Erebor to claim treasure, and fought in the Battle of the Five Armies, where he eventually made peace.
