One day, when winter arrives and food begins to be scarce, Hansel and Gretel's stepmother persuades their father to take the children to the woods and leave them there. Hansel and Gretel's father desperately didn't want to do that, but he was afraid of his wife and eventually agreed. He takes Hansel and Gretel to the forest, but the clever Hansel has a plan in place. He dropped small pebbles along the way, so that they could find their way home. However, when they returned to the forest a second time, their stepmother had put Hansel and Gretel in a basket and let them go.
